About Atlético Madrid
Club Atlético de Madrid, founded in 1903, are the third-most successful club in Spanish football behind Real Madrid and Barcelona. Known as Los Colchoneros for the mattress-ticking look of their red-and-white stripes, they have won La Liga 11 times and the Copa del Rey 10, long cast as Madrid's working-class counterweight to Real, and moved from the Vicente Calderón to the Metropolitano in 2017.
Under Diego Simeone, in charge since late 2011, Atlético became one of Europe's most durable sides: hard-running and disciplined, champions of Spain in 2013/14 and 2020/21 and beaten Champions League finalists in 2014 and 2016, both times by Real Madrid. Their European pedigree is the Europa League, won three times, each followed by a Super Cup. Antoine Griezmann, the club-record scorer, and one-club midfielder Koke define the era.
