About Virgil van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk is the captain of both Liverpool and the Netherlands, and widely rated among the finest centre-backs of his generation. Liverpool signed him from Southampton in January 2018 for £75m, then a world-record fee for a defender, and he anchored the sides that won the 2019 Champions League and the 2019/20 Premier League, the club's first league title in 30 years.
In 2019 he was voted UEFA Men's Player of the Year, the first defender to win it, and finished runner-up to Lionel Messi for the Ballon d'Or. He captained Liverpool to a second Premier League title in 2024/25 under Arne Slot and signed a contract to 2027. He has led the Netherlands since 2018.
