Even the best defence in the league keeps a clean sheet less often than you think. One honest sum turns goals conceded into a percentage, and one more turns the percentage into points.

“Nailed-on clean sheet this week.” It is said in every fantasy chat and every pub, usually about a big club at home to a struggler, and it is almost never true. The uncomfortable fact about clean sheets is that even the best defence in the league fails to keep one more often than it succeeds. One honest sum shows why, and once you have seen it, the way you read defenders changes.

One sum, honestly

Goals are rare events that arrive at a rate. A defence that concedes 1.2 goals a game on average does not concede 1.2 goals every game; it concedes none some weeks, one most weeks, three now and then. When events behave like that, the chance of none at all follows directly from the rate, and it is the same piece of maths that sits behind every scoreline on this site. You do not need the formula to use the result. You need one honest input, how many goals this defence should expect to concede against this attack, and the table below.

Read it once and the pundit language starts to sound strange. A defence good enough to hold a decent attack to one expected goal, which is genuinely good, keeps a clean sheet about 37% of the time. The fortress fixture, the soft home game everyone circles, gets the best defences to roughly 45%. Nothing in real football gets much past a coin flip.

Why it always feels more certain than it is

Memory keeps the shutouts and files the 1–0 defeats under bad luck. A defence with a 40% clean sheet chance strings three together only about 6% of the time, yet across a season of fixtures that run will happen to someone, and that someone will be called a fortress. The feeling of certainty comes from the story; the number never moved. This is the same trap as form and momentum: the streak is what randomness looks like when you only remember the hits.

A clean sheet is not a fact about a good defence. It is a coin the fixture weights.

What a clean sheet is actually worth

In fantasy terms the arithmetic is short. A clean sheet pays a defender four points, so its expected value is the probability times four: about 1.6 points a week for a defender with a 40% chance, about 1.0 at 25%. That gap, six tenths of a point a week, compounds over a 38-game season into the difference between a premium defender earning his price and not.

In real football the value is even simpler: concede nothing and you cannot lose. A clean sheet is worth at least a point by definition, which is why defensively organised sides overperform their talent in league tables, and why the model treats shutting up shop as a strategy rather than an absence of ambition. Defence is underrated for an honest reason: its payoff is invisible. Nobody clips a goal that did not happen.

The fixture moves it more than the name

Because the probability hangs on the goals-conceded rate, the biggest lever is not who the defenders are but who they are playing. Halve the rate, from 1.6 against a strong attack to 0.8 against a blunt one, and the clean sheet chance more than doubles, from 20% to 45%. No transfer, no tactical revolution, just the calendar. This is why a good defender in a brutal run of fixtures is quietly worse value than an ordinary one with a kind month ahead.

One caution for the doublers-up: two defenders from the same team are not two bets. Either the team concedes or it does not, so both live and die together. That is fine as a deliberate play, but call it what it is: one bet at twice the stake.

What the model can and cannot do

Every Touchline match page carries both teams’ goal rates, which means it carries both clean sheet probabilities, whether or not they are printed. The model can price a shutout honestly and show its working. It cannot promise one, and it never will: a 45% chance fails more often than not, and the record of every call, hit and miss, stays on the receipts page.
