About Alfredo Di Stéfano

Alfredo Di Stéfano, La Saeta Rubia, was the complete forward who transformed Real Madrid into the dominant force of European football. Born in Buenos Aires in 1926, he starred for River Plate and Colombia's Millonarios before joining Real Madrid in 1953, scoring 216 league goals in 282 games and taking two Ballon d'Or awards. Between 1956 and 1960 he led Madrid to five consecutive European Cups, scoring in every final.

His nationality reflects a wandering career: capped by Argentina, then Spain after taking citizenship, with unofficial appearances for Colombia, and he never played at a World Cup finals. He retired in 1966, later managed and served as Real Madrid's honorary president, and died in Madrid in July 2014, three days after his 88th birthday.
