What the draw decides
Fifty-four nations go into twelve groups of four or five, six of each. Every nation plays the others in its group home and away between March and November 2027. The four hosts are drawn into separate groups.
Twenty places go to the twelve group winners and the eight best runners-up. A hard draw usually costs a nation the group win rather than qualification, which is why the draw matters less than it feels like it does. We explained why in full.
The hosts are the unusual part. They are not seeded into the finals, and only two reserved places catch the best-ranked hosts who miss. The simulator redraws the groups on every run so the luck of the draw sits inside the numbers.
